What AI Mode is
AI Mode answers in writing instead of a list of ten links, and it keeps the conversation going: a follow-up question builds on the one before. Google's help page describes how it works: AI Mode "uses a “query fan-out” technique, dividing your question into subtopics and searching for each one simultaneously". The answer comes with links to the pages it drew on.
It is not the same thing as an AI Overview, even if both come from Google.
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | At the top of normal results | A separate mode you choose |
| When | Only when Google judges a summary "additive to classic Search" | Whenever you open it |
| Follow-up questions | No | Yes. In Search Console each one counts as a new query |
| Position in Search Console | The whole overview holds one position, shared by all its links | Counted like a page of search results |
| A click on a link | Counts as a click | Counts as a click |
The counting rules come from Search Console's help on impressions and clicks. Google also notes that the two "may use different models and techniques", so they will not always cite the same pages.
Is AI Mode available in Morocco?
Yes. Google's list of countries and territories where AI Mode works names Morocco, and its list of languages includes Arabic and French. The list does not mention darija or Tamazight, so expect the best answers in French, standard Arabic and English.
It is part of Google Search and free to use. Google reserves some of its newer models inside AI Mode for paying Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
How to open AI Mode
- Directly: go to
google.com/ai. - From a search: type your question on google.com and choose AI Mode above the results.
- In the Google app: tap AI Mode on the home screen.
There is nothing to switch on. To go back to the usual results, choose the All tab.
What AI Mode changes for a business
Take a question a traveller could ask: a riad in Fes with a terrace, room for a family of five, a short walk from Bab Boujloud. AI Mode does not run that sentence as one search. It splits it into pieces, location, terrace, family rooms, and searches each one. A riad whose site states plainly that it has a terrace, how many beds each room holds and how far it is from the gate gives the system something to cite for each piece. A site that shows those facts only in photos gives it nothing.
- The follow-up is a second chance. Each new question is a new search, so a page can be picked up at the second or third question even if the first answer cited someone else.
- Local facts come from your Business Profile too. Google asks site owners to keep their Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date for its AI features.
- No special file or markup. Google: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- One setting to check. Search Console now has a Search generative AI control. Include is the default. A site set to exclude disappears from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
How to see whether AI Mode shows your site
Search Console's generative AI performance report, open to all sites since 31 August 2026, gives the impressions your pages received in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It counts the two together, and gives no queries or clicks. The clicks are in the usual Performance report, mixed with the rest of your Web traffic. Our monthly reports quote the AI figures from that report, under the heading AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The quickest check is still manual: ask AI Mode the questions your customers ask, in French and in Arabic, and note which sites it links. If they are directories or platforms, your profile there is part of the work.
And the Gemini app?
Gemini is Google's separate assistant, and in Morocco it is the second source of visits from AI assistants after ChatGPT: 40.4% against 47.7% in October 2026, by Statcounter's count. Google's help says Gemini "may provide links to sources" and shows a Sources button when it has them, but adds that "Not all responses include related links or sources". A site owner can keep content out of Gemini's training and grounding with the Google-Extended token, which Google says "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search". Our guide to GEO and SEO compares all the assistants.
